Who are the intended to use the Standard?

This standard can be applied to any kind of organization, big or small, trader or manufacturer, offices and services establishments, hospitals, schools, government organizations and any organizations.

The standard can be used by small operations, as well as by high risk large organisations. While the standard requires that OH&S risks are addressed and should be controlled, it also takes a risk-based approach to the ISO 45001:2018 management system itself, to ensure

  1. a) That it is effective and
  2. b) Being improved to meet an organisation’s ever changing “context”.

This risk-based approach is consistent with the way of organizations to manage their other “business” risks and encourages the integration of the standard.

KEY FEATURES OF THE ISO 45001 STANDARD:

  • ISO 45001 standard places great emphasis on the responsibility of senior management.
  • ISO 45001 explicitly includes persons who are not permanently employed, but are in other ways working under the responsibility of the organisations, such as subcontractors, as well as processes that have been outsourced in their entity.
  • The standard introduces the term “opportunities”, as a new aspect in the field of OH&SM. This covers issues that go beyond the minimization of OHS risks and hazards.

How ISO 45001 relate to other ISO standards?

ISO 45001 follows the high-level structure of approach that is being easily applied to other ISO management system standards, such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. While developing the OH&SM standard, consideration has been given to the content of other international standards such as OHSAS 18001 or the International Labour Organisation’s “ILO –OSH Guidelines” and various national standards, as well as to the ILO’s International Labour standards and conventions (ILSs).

The organisations adopting the standard should find its requirements consistent with the other standards. That will allow for a relatively easy migration from using an existing OH&S management system standard to using ISO 45001 standard, and also allow for the integration with the requirements of other ISO system standards into their organisation’s management processes.
